Phase 1: Desk-top Study PDF Print
Sunday, 07 October 2007

The first stage in developing a hydro-power project is assessing the available energy. Our desk-top study service allows clients to assess the feasibility of a hydro-power installation while keeping initial costs to a minimum.

The desk-top study consists of:

  • A computer generated flow prediction of the type used by SEPA to assess abstraction permissions
  • Suggested system layout based on map data
  • Estimated energy yield and income calculations
  • Estimated costs
  • Identification of potential barriers to development

From this information the client can decide if the scheme is financially viable and whether  to proceed to Phase 2.

Phase 2: Preliminary System Design PDF Print
Tuesday, 15 June 2010
The second stage in developing a hydro-power project involves a detailed survey of the site to facilitate the system design and also to identify any environmental constraints. A site survey will normally take 1 or 2 days depending on the size of the site.

Our preliminary design report package consists of:

  • An updated energy yield and income estimate based on the computer model from Phase 1 and physical measurements made on-site.
  • Full system specification
  • Detailed site layout
  • Intake and turbine house drawings
  • An updated cost estimate
  • Identification of potential environmental issues
  • Breakdown of information required forthe SEPA abstraction licence application
  • A draft construction method statement

Although the information in this report should be sufficient for abstraction, planning and grid-connection applications; further studies may be requested by the authorities.

Phase 3: Permissions PDF Print
Sunday, 07 October 2007
The third stage in developing a hydro-power project involves applying for an abstraction licence, planning permission and, where applicable, connection to the electricity distribution network. The design report from Phase 2 should contain enough information for all of these applications but additional information may be required.

We can act as an agent for the client, using our experience of working with the relevant authorities to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.
